Traditional African Belly-Binding

Belly Binding is an old technique if applied correctly can support and encourage the healing of the postpartum body.

In traditional cultures around the world, the postpartum recovery period is herald as one of the most significant times in a woman’s life. She has not only given birth to her baby-a renewed spirit, she has also given birth to her new self, even if this isn’t her first baby. This mother is to be nourished and nurtured by others so that she may show up as her best self for herself, her baby, and upon the completion of the Wenele, her community.

How is she able to do this?

She will be able to do this because of the cultural traditions that the postpartum recovery period is riddled with. A major tenet of the Wenele is belly binding. This is the use of non stretchable cotton fabric that is wrapped around the hips and abdomen. This technique when used correctly will gently & safely guide the organs back to their natural positioning and close the hips.
