You have achieved one of the greatest labors of love by birthing your little one. How will you and baby be cared for once you're home?

Reclaiming the Wenele (The 1st 40 Days After Birth)- In America so much attention is given to mother and baby prenatally but once they leave the hospital mothers and their families are left to figure it out on their own. In many cultures around the world it is understood that the days after birth are extremely special and sacred for families, mothers and their babies. It is the time where families bond with their new addition but it is also a time where mothers and babies tend to be the most vulnerable.

In Africa, one of the essential components to a mother's recovery is to be surrounded by community. The many mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and friends pour into that mother. During the Wenele the mother is given essential information regarding newborn care, care for herself, the women of the community prepare nutritionally dense foods to optimize recovery, provide methods to increase milk production and more.
Our Mothers' Light doulas provides postpartum care based on the African model of care-a model that is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Tem and Gourmatche people. We strive to care for our clients and their families in a way that honors their humanity and our Ancestors.

Under our care, mothers will be cared for in a way that allows them to:
  • Receive optimal rest and relaxation
  • Gain invaluable information on newborn care
  • Have breastfeeding and bottle feeding support
  • Eat nourishing and healing foods
  • Use herbal remedies for recovery
  • Receive herbal healing baths for mother and baby
  • Learn belly binding & baby-wearing

We also help the family to navigate the demands that newborn places on their schedule by being available to:
  • Run errands
  • Provide care for older children
  • Look after baby while the family rests or spends time with each other
  • Perform light housekeeping
  • Assist with processing the birth experience
  • And so much more
